Things would have felt much more normal if she didn’t know that there were two massive men within ten feet of her at all times. Being normal was often what people didn’t want to be, but Odette wasn’t most people. All she wanted to do was a little shopping. What she was shopping for wasn’t exactly the most ordinary thing either, but she could at least pretend that she was normal. She wished that she didn’t have bodyguards. It was so obvious. To her at least.
Odette wasn’t sure what this dinner party was for, but she was allowed to visit New York for the weekend to buy a new gown for it. It all had become a blur to her, all the parties. She had already gotten a pair of formal shoes that would cover up her scarred feet.
She had gone into many high class designer stores but still she hadn’t found anything. She would have bought a gown she found in a Chanel store if it wasn’t blue. Her father would have killed her. She already had too many red gowns and there weren’t any good green gowns that were long enough that they wouldn’t get dirty looks. Pink would be acceptable if it didn’t make her feel like a life-size Barbie. She tried on a violet gown with a mermaid cut and a single shoulder strap embedded with jewels.
As she was examining the gown in the mirror, one of her bodyguards suddenly showed up right behind her. His hand on her shoulder startled her and she spun around, and slamming her fisted hands into his stomach. One of her first bodyguards had taught her some basic moves about how to defend herself if she needed to and it seemed he had done a good job. She glared at him and told him to leave her alone, not feeling sorry for his pain. It served him right.
She felt like this was the dress and studied it a bit more in the mirror. She really liked the dress, but she wished that she could have a second opinion that wasn’t from someone trying to sell the gown or one of her bodyguards. They would have told her every gown was good on her. She sighed and bit her bottom lip as she thought about it.
