Lola could not wait to take a shower. She was sweaty and her skin was crawling, as if her ‘audience’ still was touching her. She hated her job, but she was good at it, the pay was good, and no one else would hire her. After all, when you rested on the underbelly of society, not many people jumped at the opportunity to hire you. Until she had enough money to go through school this was all she could do.
She left the Diamond Legz out of the employee exit and began walking down the street toward her apartment. Though this was the city that never slept, this was the closest time that New York was unoccupied. The streets were nearly empty. A car was rare and the sidewalks were unoccupied besides a few mice, which distracted her with her keen ears.
It was times like this that she was tempted to use her powers to return to the place she called home faster. However, there was always a chance that someone would see her and life was hard enough in poverty. The last thing she needed was for the rest of the world to know that she was a mutant.
The dark streets were clear to her eyes as she advanced down the sidewalk. She most certainly did live in the ghetto. Over her head, a vodka bottle flew out of a window and shattered at her feet, followed by the echoing shouts of an old couple. She sighed and shook her head. Around this time, these two were always fighting. For the sake of their neighbors, Lola wished they would get a divorce, dispite the fact that they seemed to deserve each other.

Devika was walking down the street she was unfamiliar with this part of town in fact she was completely lost, the later it got and the more she walk the more lost she’d become she was beginning to get frustrated she had meant to stay on the main roads but had ended up on this street. She could tell this was not the best part of town, but she refused to ask anyone for help she’d fine her own way back to the main part of the city she was so tempted right then to use her power to help her get to higher grown so she could see where she was but she knew even at this late hour people where still walking around. Devika silently crust to herself in Arabic she just needed to find a place to crash for the night a hotel would be nice almost anything at this point.

Lola’s sharp ears perked at an abrupt outburst in a different language. She assumed it was Arabic, but she easily could have been wrong. Her pupils seemed to narrow into catlike slits for a moment as she examined the darkness until she found Devika. Lola couldn’t help but smirk. She had seen her type far too many times for it to be a surprise. Some called them newcomers. She addressed them as their politically correct name. Tourists.
She glanced around, noting that Devika hadn’t noticed her yet. Lola shrank into the shadows before leaping forward, crossing the entire street in a single bound, landing without hardly a noise as she landed behind a car. After another few seconds, Lola revealed herself, walking out from behind the automobile.
“Let me guess. You’re lost. Do you want me to take you back to your hotel?”

Devika turn and looked when she hurd someone talking to her she chouldn’t really see her but she could tell the who ever was talking to her was a girl about the same age as herself Devika hadn’t expected anyone to be talking to her right now it was late and most people didn’t talk to other on the street unless they wanted something and Devika was in no mood right now she normally whould of stoped and talked and been nice but now it was late and she was getting more frustrated by the second “No I’m not lost I’m just out for a walk” Devika snapped folding her arms across her chest. Devika accent was thick but most would not be able to tell what it was most would think it was some sort of British accent and not Indian because of how Indians are pretraid on t.v Devika hated being lost like this it made her look like an idiot, and she didn’t want to prove she was one by telling this girl that she was lost. She didn’t need someone to walk around the city with her helping her find a hotel, size she hadn’t bought a room from a hotel yet so there was no hotel to go back to she just had to find one and she could do that by her self she didn’t need some “New Yorker” showing her around. Lola arched a brow at this and chuckled lightly, stepping into view and planting her hands on her hips. It was surprising how many people assumed that New Yorkers were snotty bitchy moochers that would only do something if there was something in it for them. Lola didn’t need to be helpful. She had been working since six. If there was anything she wanted to do, it was go to sleep, but she wasn’t cruel enough to leave this girl wandering the street.
“Yeah, you’re out for a walk. And I’m the pope, not a scab on the bottom of New York society’s underbelly. One of the few that doesn’t think only about themselves. Hard to believe, I know, but it’s true. If you think I’m going to lead you into a warehouse where I’ll cut out your kidney’s and sell them on the black market you’re wrong. I’m not even creative. I saw that on Urban Legends. Now, I’ll play stupid and act like I haven’t seen a million other people like you lost in Alphabet City. Would you like for me to help you?”
Her words weren’t cruel or demeaning, just blunt.
“It’s not very often you’ll meet someone around here willing to help you. I’d take advantage if I were you.”

Devika should of known that saying she was out for a walk wouldn’t work, who takes walks at this hour anyway she relaxed she shoulders a little, now she just felt that she was being rude to the girl it wasn’t like she was asking her for drugs or anything. Devika gave a small smile when she made the comment about selling her organs on the black market the thought hadn’t come to her mind but she’d like to see someone try, if someone did try to cut her open she’d just quickly use her powers and get out of there and kick the snot out of who ever tried. She looked at the girl still debating or not she should say she was lost or not even thought they both knew she was, Devika just didn’t want to say it out loud it was like saying she was an idiot but at the same time if she didn’t ask for help she’d end up sleeping who knows where. “I guess your right” Devika gritted her teeth but sighed giving in it wasn’t like this girl could hurt her “Look so if you really want to help, I just need to be pointed towards the nearest hotel I got off on the wrong stop on the Subway and ended up hear I just need a place to rest for the night” She didn’t think for a second that anywhere near hear would be the safest place to stay for the night but it was better then nothing

Lola smiled and shook her head, laughing lightly.
“It would figure that the one thing you need isn’t around for miles. The subway should be closed for the night by now or else I would tell you to take it all the way out of Alphabet City, but that doesn’t seem likely. Around here the only option you have is to wander all night and hope some idiot doesn’t mug you or pose as a homeless person and crash next to a dumpster.”
Sometimes Lola was a bit too blunt, but she would have rather been like that as opposed to her tongue being drowned by ambiguity every waking moment. She exhaled a sigh as her head collapsed onto her chest.
“I’m not a typical person here so I’m not going to let you do that. Come on. I have a couch you can crash on for the night and I can take out once the sun is up. I only have a few rules and you don’t seem like the kind of person who would break them. No needles, no powders, no drugs in general. If you’re packing, I could care less, but I grew up with drug addicts so the less of it I can be around the better.”
She readjusted her bag on her shoulder and pressed forward.
“It’s only about a block up. I just got off work so the faster we can get there the better.”

“so im guessing no hubby bubblys” Devika joked adjusting her bag she of course didn’t have a problem with drugs she was clean see had known people who liked to live the high life but Devika preferred keeping her brain cells not frying them. Devika wasn’t sure about spending the night on someone couch she was almost sure that hara was had sunk his way into her pack and how would this girl respond when Devika opened her bag to grab her tooth brush and a flying snake flew out Devika would have to keep her bag closed all night which would drive Hara crazy if he was in there but it be safer for him and her and a couch was a lot more tempting then a behind a dumpster. Devika let the girl lead the way as she fallowed Devika voice was remorse when she talked now to the girl “you don’t have to do this you know I can take care of myself, you don’t even know who I for all you know I’m more of those mass murders who kills people in there sleep and the cops have no idea how they got in the house because they where invited in” Devika would never do that in her life, She could never just go out and murder someone she’d have to be cold blooded to do that and this girl was nice enough to her that Devika was pretty sure there wouldn’t be any problems

Lola smirked and shook her head. “Shisha isn’t a drug. Drugs are addictive and turn you into an idiot, in any sense. I guess if you’re dumb enough to smoke it every night then it’s a drug, but I consider hookahs social pieces. Others might consider it a drug, but they clearly don’t know what a real drug is.”
Her parents were constantly high on something when Lola was growing up. She hadn’t seen them in over a year so she couldn’t they were now, but it wouldn’t have shocked her. When Devika suggested she was a psychotic serial killer, Lola had to laugh. “If you were, you wouldn’t have suggested that. Besides, ninety percent of serial killers are males and it’s very rare in the ten percent of females that they target other women. I’m a New Yorker. I gotta know this stuff…that and I watch Criminal Minds in my spare time. That and the term mass murderer gave you away. All serial killers know what they are. Most of them are cocky about it too.”
It wasn’t long until they reached her building. She unlocked the outer door and advanced up the stairs to the top floor. “Be warned, it’s kinda a mess.” She opened the door and threw her keys on the table. There wasn’t much in the studio apartment. A bed shoved in the corner, a sofa, a dinner table, and a coffee table in front of the sofa. Lola didn’t even have a television, but her laptop was buried under a mass of papers on the coffee table, rough sketches of women in elaborate outfits. There was a mannequin standing in the corner, wearing a black cocktail dress with extensive detailing, including a basket weave around the waist, and draping. A few other dresses hung on hangers or in bags on a wire stretching across one of the walls. On the larger table was a sewing machine and a surger hardly visible through waves of fabric.

Devika smile when Lola explained how she couldn’t be a serial killer it was true there was no way she could but it still didn’t answer the question on why she was helping her out she didn’t know her and Devika could help her self around “your trusting your criminal knowledge on a show” Devika rasied her brow she didn’t that much time watching T.V she found other forms of entertainment mostly in books. When she told her it would be a mess she just shrug it off but she never would of expected seeing what she did in the apartment “You make dresses, that’s is interesting..” Devika bit her lip not sure what to say or do

“No, I read a bunch of articles too. My second choice in school would be crime scene investigation so I read a lot of them when I can, but once I get enough money I’ll be going to design school. I’m not stupid enough to just trust the media. Criminal Minds is just the only show that actual gives insight into the minds of serial killers and they’re actually dead on. It just makes the research more interesting. That and I can’t read and do anything else to save my life.”
On one of the broad railings above was a small black furball leapt from the ceiling and landed on Lola’s shoulder. She glanced over at her fuzzy friend and shook her head. “It’s a good thing you didn’t make a bigger mess out of this place or else you’d be sleeping outside again.” This kitten didn’t have a name so she called him Puss. Even when she told him to go away, he would always come back. She had a feeling that he felt attached to her due to their similarities.
Her eyes fell upon her dresses. “You could say that. I spend most of my time designing and sewing. It’s less expensive than buying clothes.”

“you have a cat” Devika said looking at the small kitten smiling “boy or girl” Devika loved animals she didn’t really no why maybe it was because of her power but she loved animals before she discovered she was a mutant. Devika felt Hara slid up the backpack which conformed her supsion about him being there hopefully he’d smell the cat and decide that the pack was a good place to hide and hopefully the cat wouldn’t go sniffing around her bag though in the middle of the night. “there lovely you have a talent so let me see if I get this straight you are a chick who takes in complete strangers into your house, who lives in a little apartment in New York who in her spare time reads articles involving crime, watches criminal minds and designs clothing and who wants to go to school is there anything else I should know about you” she smiled she was joking of course she didn’t care for to much more information the girl hardly even knew her and they didn’t even know each others names yet

She scratched the kitten behind the ears as she answered. “He’s a boy. I initially didn’t want to become attached to him so I call him Puss.” Lola kissed the top of the kitten’s head before nudging him off her shoulder.
Lola smiled. “Thanks.”
“Oh, so we’re playing the get-to- know you game? Hm. Lemme see. My name is Lola Mayne. My actual name is Rebecca, but once you get to know me…I’m not a Rebecca or a Becky or a Becka. I work at Diamond Legz. I hate dating…that’s about it.”

Devika smiled “its hard not to get attached to small animals” she said watching the kitten Devika rasied an brow when she said that she worked at diamond legz “isn’t that a dance club or something I thought I something with that name as I was walking around today didn’t really stop and look though so I might be thinking somewhere different…anyway my names Devika Veni sometimes I go by Devi” Devika gave a small smile she really wasn’t all this good at the get to know you game

“It’s actually pretty easy when they pee in your closet.” She explained, shaking her head at the thought of all her clothes that ended up being ruined.
She swallowed a lump in her throat before answering. “Yeah, it’s the most tacky, disgusting, and vile place I could ever hope to work, but it beats hanging out on the corner every night.”
It wasn’t difficult to come to the conclusion that Lola didn’t have much choice. The fact that it was true only made Lola more ashamed.
“Devika, huh? What part of India are you from?”
