It had happened. Lola was having a good day. She had come into the city to see if she could sell one of her dresses to a professional in the fashion district and he had actually bought it, and for a generous price. With this she could have easily started design school now. Naturally, she called all of her friends to share the news. They insisted that they would celebrate with her once they were all able. She decided to go to the beach and treat herself to some relaxing. Or…so she thought.
Lola had just laid out her towel when a volleyball struck the ground at her feet. A group of guys about her age yelled for her to pass the ball back. She tossed it from hand to hand, staring at it thoughtfully, a smile forming on her lips. She hadn’t played volleyball since she got her GED when she was fifteen. If she remembered correctly, she was good at it.
The owners of the ball were getting irritated. She narrowed her eyes at them and threw the ball into the air. Her cat senses seemed to ignite was the ball flew up and she hit the ball away from her. The boys were surprised when she was able to successfully hit the ball to them. One of the teams called her over to join the game and she was quick to oblige. It seemed that her mutation enhanced her skill in this sport. She was surprised that she was the best player, not only on her team, but out of all of the players. The ball only got away from her once and when it did, it bounced off the skull of another beach goer.
She covered her mouth, astounded that she had done something so stupid. She rushed away from her new friends to apologize. “I am so sorry!” she exclaimed once she was in earshot. Someone screaming at her, at least she assumed she was Ball Girl, and the volleyball was thrown back in her direction. Without altering her gaze, she caught the ball and held it against her arm and hip.
