Ever since Mystique had managed to get into the school and mess with Cerebro the system had been acting up. Jean had fixed it once and brought it back online, but the professor had reported that it seemed to be on the fritz. So Jean was asked to see what she could do about figuring out what the damage was and to repair it. The redhead was one of the few who had the knowledge to actually work on the machine and she took every aspect of her work seriously and with care. This early evening found Cerebro's doors open and Jean settled on the platform fiddling with the wiring beside her. One hand came up to brush the short layered locks back out of her face and the lights caught the silver charm braclet with the X-men logo that rested around her wrist.
With a small sigh the woman glanced to the open doors staring down the hallway towards the medlab at the end. She had spent a lot of time there the past several days working on inventory so more could be ordered of what she was low on. A brief memory flashed through her mind, Logan lying on the med lab table after his fight with Sabertooth, swathed in bandages, healed, and smiling at her. With a shake of her head Jean banished the memory from her mind and those striking emerald eyes focused on the wires next to her once more. She shifted to settle on her knees and lean over the compartment as slender fingers worked with the jumble of wires.
Jean
The sound of her name in her mind that had the woman glancing up and around. It had been a very soft whisper, like a light breeze caressing her mind. Abandoning the wires Jean got to her feet and dusted off the black slacks she wore before she moved along the length of the platform back towards the doors. Her boot heels echoed faintly in the round room before she paused at the doors and gazed down the hall.
"Hello?"
The sound of her voice was all she heard and she could see no one down the hall that led to the med lab, nor could she telepaticlly sense a presence. Nevertheless she felt uneasy and wrapped her arms around herself as she turned to head back to continue her repairs. Things had been strange ever since Liberty Island but Jean had done her best to try and brush it all off. The headaches were getting worse however, as were the voices she caught more often now from everyone around the manor. She kept all of it to herself, dealt with the pain, and kept herself busy so she didn't worry anyone; she knew however it wouldn't last forever.

“Are you talking to yourself?”
Alice was very good at sneaking about, so much that sometimes even distracted telepaths didn’t notice her, as that seemed to be the case with Jean Grey today. Sure, she hadn’t actually been in sight until the X-woman had turned back to her repairs… She was still a telepath. No one snuck up on telepaths! To make things worse, it shouldn’t be easy to ignore such a twisted mind like Alice’s… Or so she’d guess.
She stood right on the line where the doors would be if they were closed, leaning forward so only her head was ‘actually’ in the room. Cerebro was a telepath place, so she didn’t feel much… welcome being there. Not to mention the material on the walls made it seem far brighter then it should, Alice and bright lights did not mix well.
Her eyes were squinted just a touch, open wide enough to clearly notice her black hole eyes, but closed just so it was clear that she hated how bright it was. Not only that… She looked utterly exhausted, as if she’d been awake more then 48 hours straight. And she had been. Only 48 was a modest number. She’d been awake almost a hundred hours, barely over four days. Why? Well, you couldn’t have her sleeping when she was hearing the corrupted voices in her head so clearly she sometimes mistook them for real people! No one wanted her killing random students just because the voices told her to…

Hearing a voice that was out loud had the redhead glancing up and she blinked as she saw Alice standing at the doorway watching her. There were so many students here at the manor at any given time that Jean had trouble keeping all of them straight, but she searched her mind and came up with the girl's name.
"Alice I believe? I thought I heard someone call my name. Was there something I can do for you?"
The redhead shifted slightly to get to her feet and glanced down at the mass of wires and electronics that made up Cerebro. With a small shake of her head she turned her attention to the student in front of her, a break was needed, and Alice provided that for her. The strange voice that she had heard in her head unnerved Jean a little bit, she knew she was having problems with her powers, but this voice had felt different from the usual din. One hand came up to brush the hair back from her face before she crossed her arms over her chest and smiled at Alice before. Jean was careful to keep her thoughts guarded and not touch Alice's mind, telepaths knew that not everyone was stable, and it was hard to see on the outside in most cases. If one got lost in an unstable person's mind they risk damage to both. Menal damage was not something that could be cured easily, Jean had dealt with people like that before, and she did not want to risk being one of those people. She would of course do what she could to help Alice if the young woman had come down here for a reason. The students were allowed in the sub levels for the danger room sessions and that was it. As far as Jean knew there was no session being held today.

Alice’s stare was completely blank when Jean turned her attention to her. Well… as blank as someone could be when they’d been awake four days in a row. After a few moments of this staring though… That blank expression was replaced with something thoughtful, as if trying to figure out if she was the one who’d called Jean’s name. “Something you can do for me?” She stared off into space, deep in thought. “I don’t know… I just heard you talking to yourself and thought I’d see what you were doing.” A short pause as her black gaze returned to Jean. “Were you talking to yourself? Or was it some telepath thing?”
Again, Alice paused, finally realizing what Jean had said. “I didn’t say your name. I haven’t said it all day… I could say it, if it would make you feel better?” Finally Alice smiled somewhat cheerfully, which was a little out of character for her… But when you were awake for so long you tended to have strange behavior… Wasn’t like she was that normal to begin with though.
“You really are hearing voices now? Don’t you always hear voices though?” She tilted her head to the side a little, playing the part of innocent curiosity. “I thought Telepaths always heard voices, isn’t that what your power basically is?” The way she was speaking… It was almost like she was asking Jean if she was just as crazy as Alice.

Jean tilted her head slightly at Alice's query about if she had been talking to herself or not. The young woman was a bit on the odd side, but that didn't stop Jean or most of the staff from being around her. Everyone here was either shunned by society and needed sanctuary, or came here with their families consent. Either way the staff did their best to make everyone feel at home and wanted, every one of the staff knew what it was like to be judged. After a few seconds of silence Jean shook her head and moved to stand in front of Alice.
"I'm working on trying to get the bugs out of Cerebro, its been acting up lately and we don't need that with the professor using it all the time."
The fact that Alice seemed to want to cheer her up helped Jean to relax slightly and a soft smile graced her lips as she fiddled with the charm bracelet on her wrist. Looking into those black eyes Jean couldn't help but wonder if Alice was one that knew much more then she ever let on. She was intelligent and Jean could see it in her eyes and hear it in her voice.
"You're right, telepaths do hear voices, almost all the time unless they find a way to block them, the one I heard though....It wasn't like the usual ones I hear. "

Odd was an understatement. Alice was insane… Sometimes. The rest of the time she just wasn’t in her right mind. It made her rather unpredictable, and sometimes lead to people assuming one thing when that purpose hadn’t been intended. “Oh.” Alice didn’t care about Cerebro. She didn’t have much interest in it, seeing as she didn’t have anyone she wanted a telepath to find, and she wasn’t a telepath herself. To her… It was just one overly bright room that irritated her eyesight.
Just because Alice smiled didn’t mean she was intending to cheer Jean up, she was smiling because she found it funny that a telepath was hearing voices that didn’t belong to other people. Perhaps Alice wasn’t the only one who heard voices that belonged to no one. “Usual ones…” Alice’s smile vanished into that thin, straight line of no emotion, her thoughts wandering once again. In some ways her attention almost seemed to be…. Well lacking. Like she just might walk off in mid sentence because she got bored. Which she just might…
The way Jean described sort of made her think of the Shadows, always telling Alice to do horrible things… It made her smirk a little. Jean didn’t have it that bad. “The voices aren’t a problem until they control you.”

Jean's smile slipped slightly at Alice's words and she let her hand drop from the charm bracelet she had been fiddling with. What had been said sent a shiver down the redhead's spine and she turned away from Alice and headed back to Cerebro's controls to finish up the work she had to do with it. She didn't speak for several minutes as she knelt down next to the panel and worked with a few wires and plugs. The sudden hum of the machine starting up followed by the running lights for the platform clicking on had Jean smiling as she glanced down the length to the doors. The redhead gave a nod of satisfaction and shifted to get to her feet once more as soon the panel had been put back in place. Jean let out a small sigh of relief and ran a hand over the back of her neck as she faced Alice once more and caught those dark eyes with her own emerald ones.
"Well I'm done here finally, I just hope it doesn't continue to malfunction, its not easy to repair. In regards to your comment about the voices controling....I have no intention of letting that happen if I can help it. I thank you for this talk Alice, and I hope you have a nice day."
Jean smiled at the young woman and moved down the platform to the doors ushering her out as she did so. Once both were clear the doors closed and sealed once more allowing access to Jean, Xavier, and a select few.
