Beep...beep...beep, the heart monitor made it's steady beat. Attached to the monitor, was Xavier. Different cords and tubes lead from him to different machines and bags. Among the heart monitor was respirator, doing what it could to keep air flowing to Xavier's almost crushed body.
Standing vigil over him was Scott. The X-Man hadn't left Xavier's side since he was brought down to the infirmary. Even when he did leave the bed side, which wasn't often, he would be back not long after. He hadn't been to the danger room for training since he had heard the news. His hands balled into tight fists as he stared at his teacher.
"I don't know if you can hear me, and I don't know who did this to you, but I promise, they will pay."
Xavier hadn't moved since they brought him into the room, laying a stills as a corpse, yet still breathing. He never told anybody this, and only Jean and Xavier truly knew how he felt. He had looked to Xavier as both a father and a mentor. So seeing him lieing there motionless left Scott lost.

The doors to the med lab opened and Jean stepped inside pausing for a moment when she saw Scott looking out for Xavier, the man hadn't done much else aside from that and Jean was proud of him for it. She glanced over her shoulder as the doors closed behind her before she started further into the room. The heels of her shoes clicked on the tile floor as she moved closer, having paused only for a moment to grab the lab coat she always wore. She slipped it on over the blouse and skirt she wore buttoning the buttons before she stopped on the other side of Xavier. Emerald eyes gazed down on the prone man for several seconds before she was checking the various monitors the man was hooked up to. She checked the iv drip in Xavier's arm and moved once more to Scott's side. One slender hand came up to settle on his arm and she gazed up at him in silence for several seconds before breaking it.
"He's strong Scott, stronger then he looks. I know he'll pull out of this, he has done so before." Her voice was soft and as comforting as she could make it for him.
She could sense the feelings of loss and anger coming off her lover like heat and she wanted to find a way to calm him. She like the original team of X-men saw Xavier as a mentor and another father figure. He taught Jean about her powers and how to work with them, was patient and understanding when things were difficult. To see him lying so still instead of smiling and speaking of Storm's wonderful tea had Jean feeling just like everyone else did. Xavier was their light in the darkness that had become the world, he gave them all hope and someone had tried to extinguish that hope.

Scott didn't say anything as the door opened. He just stared at his mentor even as Jean made her rounds to check up on him. It wasn't until her hand touched his arm that he seemed to come out of whatever he was in. He looked at Jean, his eyes meeting hers, and even though he had his glasses on, it was still easy to see he was fighting back tears. He wrapped his arms around Jean and held her, glad that he had her around when he needed her, which seemed to be almost all the time.
"I should've been there Jean, I should've been able to stop this."
He hugged her close before releasing her, his hand moving down her arm to close around hers. He stood there hand in hand with her as he looked over Xavier. He wanted Charles to just wake up, look at him and smile the way he always did. To tell him that everything would be alright and they were going to pull through this. Even as Jean said he would recover, Scott had his doubts. The last time Xavier was in here was because of his mind, this time it was almost his whole body.

Jean closed her eyes as Scott spoke and she clung to him as he held her close letting one hand brush through the thick dark hair at the back of his head. When he released her and captured her hand she laced her fingers with his and glanced to Xavier once more. She was very carefully weighing her response to what Scott had said. She could feel the regret and pain coming off him in waves and it was enough to make her want to cry for him as well as the professor. She was doing everything in her power to make sure Xavier got well, but him being unresponsive was enough to scare the redheaded telepath. Emerald eyes glanced to Scott as he stood beside her and she remained still for a moment before she was leaning up to press a gentle kiss to her lover's cheek.
"You're only one man Scott, you can't take on the whole world by yourself no matter how much you wish you could. I know the professor doesn't blame you for any of this, he knows that you and any of the X-men would have done all in their power to help him if we had been able to. Don't beat yourself up over this love, you will only cause yourself more pain if you do. The professor is strong, I am keeping a constant eye on him, you my dearest need to do the same for yourself. Go get something to eat, some rest, a shower, I'll let you know the moment anything changes."

The small shivers that went through his skin began each time she touched him, and as her fingers went through his hair, he felt them again. Their hands laced together, he squeezed her hand gently, glad that he had her next to him. When she kissed his cheek, he looked at her, giving her a small kiss on her lips in return. He did love Jean, she'd always been there for him even in the darkest times.
"I just wish there was something more I could've done. Something to protect him."
Her words were comforting as usual, drawing his attention from the professor to her. As she spoke about him taking care of himself, a small yet sad smile crept along his face. He turned to her and took her hands in his, staring into the eyes he would get lost in no matter how many times he looked.
"I guess I have been needing a rest. All this worrying about everything going on is just putting me on too much of an edge to relax."
He knew he wouldn't be able to argue with Jean, especially since she was not only his friend, but the head nurse. Nobody could argue with that logic, even Xavier, which made her position a little bet more humorous.
