Ace fought the urge to roll her eyes and ask him why he wouldn't even touch her. If he truly disliked her then he didn't need to associate with her. She found his behavior confusing in every way. She understood why he wouldn't look at her and she understood, but that didn't mean he had to act like she had...cooties or something. Maybe he was a germ-a-phob. She didn't know, but that didn't mean she didn't care. Hovever, she clamped her mouth shut even though she wanted to 'kindly' inform him that she didn't have cooties and this wasn't second grade.
Since her sunglasses were dark, she couldn't exactly see what was going on behind their smokey lenses. Ace had a feeling that Howard wouldn't jump into the experiment. THerefore, when he was looking at her, she didn't know he was. Part of her was convinced that he'd take a moment to make himself try her idea. She tapped her foot aimlessly against the snow, waiting to feeling something. A little tingle, a gripping pain in her spine, nausea even. Even she was convinced that her idea wouldn't work.
"Anytime you're ready."

Howard knew that Ace would ask about his behavior eventually. It was only a matter of time before she finally got mad at him for the way he avoided contact with her. She probably wouldn't notice that he avoided touching everyone, not just her. Even if she did notice that, it's not like it wouldn't stop her from asking him about it. Although he hated to talk about it, he would do it for her. She was the closest friend he'd ever had, which was sad to say since he was getting older now. But he knew that having friends just made it harder for him. And it's hard to have a friend you can't touch, especially one like Ace.
But when she said, Anytime you're ready, he just hesitated a moment. He'd been looking at her for a good ten seconds before she'd even said that. And then he actually smiled. That had to have been the biggest smile he'd given since he was a child. Since before his powers kicked in. He showed his teeth and everything. "I've been looking at you for a while now," he admitted.

When he admited to looking at her, one of her eyebrows arched up into her forehead. She was still dubious and very reluctant to believe that he truly had been looking her in the eye. She bit her bottom lip and crossed her arms over her chest. A sly smile stretched across her face.
"I think you're lying so quick, what color are my eyes?"
She turned quickly and put her palms up over her eyes as if there were a mirror in front of her and he could still see her. Her glasses may have been dark, but it was still easy to tell colors from each other. Especially with as bright her blue eyes were, it would be difficult to look into them for ten seconds and not know that they were blue. She had to admit that she was glad to see him smile. It convinced her that he wasn't a robot of some sort. A very depressed robot. Sometimes he reminded her of the robot in the film Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy, with the exception of the fact that he never said that everything hated him. However, from time to time he did act in that fashion.

Howard only shook his head slightly but his smile didn't go away. "Blue," he send simply before added, "Very bright, beautifully blue."
He could only imagine what sort of things were going through her thoughts as she covered her eyes. As if that could do much. He'd known her eyes were blue from the first time he'd looked into them, but that was not a time he liked to remember. Of all the people whose eyes he could have looked in to, why hers? She didn't deserve that kind of pain...
He knocked those thoughts out of his mind the moment they entered. He was not going to let his stupid memories ruin this moment. He was still looking right at her, and it was the first time he could really, truly see her... even if it was behind the dim lenses of her sunglasses. It was enough to satisfy him. Crux hadn't realized how truly beautiful she really was... Not that he was tell her he thought that. Love was completely off limits for him. He knew that. If only he could find a way to tell her that, if by some craziness that she felt anything towards him later.
"Are you happy now?" he asked, raising his eyebrows as he waited for her reply. Then he added in his thoughts, I am.
